Miller 生于伦敦，长在布鲁克林，有着美国黑人、牙买加、英国、德国、法国、荷兰、叙利亚和黎巴嫩血统。1990年在宾西法尼亚州Leetsdale的 Quaker Valley高中毕业，随后被普林斯顿大学录取，他参加了一个校内表演团体并随团出国演出。从普林斯顿大学英国文学专业毕业后，Miller从纽约去了洛杉矶，开始向娱乐事业发展，随后参加了演出工作。后来他为电视剧《Buffy the Vampire Slayer》，《Popular》和《ER》客座表演，以及主演电视剧《Dinotopia》，这样他的演艺生涯开始了。他第一次出现在电影荧幕上，是饰演《The Human Stain》中Anthony Hopkins所扮角色的青年时代。接着他在《Underworld》，《Stealth》，《Joan of Arcadia》，《Ghost Whisperer》等电影中饰演配角，又为Mariah Carey拍了两只MV。由于他的突出的面部特征以及出众的演技都非常符合《Prison Break》里面的人物，他被选做了该剧的主角，随后成为了2005年电视剧季度一炮而红的明星
